Admissions Development: Best Practices

The admission process is the patient's first real experience of a hospital, and delays, registration errors and unclear information at this point affect patient safety, bed flow, billing and reputation. This programme gives admissions and patient access staff practical methods to run an admission process that is safe, efficient, accurate and patient-centred.

Hospital admissions sit at the meeting point of clinical care, bed management, insurance and patient experience. Problems are common: long waits in the emergency department for a bed, elective admissions cancelled at short notice, patients registered twice or with incorrect details, insurance approvals missing, and families left without clear information. Each problem has a cost: patient safety risks, lost bed days, rejected claims and complaints. Admissions teams are often measured on speed alone and have little say in the wider patient flow.

This programme looks at admissions as part of the whole patient journey. It moves through five stages: understanding the admission process and its standards, getting registration and identification right, managing bed flow and scheduling with clinical teams, handling insurance, eligibility and financial counselling, and improving the patient experience and team performance through measurement.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references the Joint Commission International accreditation standards for hospitals, in particular the requirements on access to care, continuity of care and patient identification, and the World Health Organization's patient safety guidance on correct patient identification. It also draws on established patient flow and service improvement methods, including Lean approaches used in healthcare.

What this changes in practice. How admissions are scheduled and prioritised; how patients are identified and registered correctly the first time; how admissions staff work with bed managers, nurses and physicians to reduce delays; how insurance and eligibility checks are completed before admission; how patients and families are informed; and which indicators managers use to improve the service.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a general hospital facing emergency department boarding, cancelled elective admissions and a rise in rejected insurance claims. Participants map the current admission process, identify failure points, practise patient conversations through role play and design an improvement plan with indicators.

In-house option. For hospitals and health systems, the programme can be tailored to your own admission policies, hospital information system, payer mix and accreditation requirements, and delivered to admissions, bed management, nursing and finance staff together.

This programme gives payer, provider and administrator teams a clear, end-to-end view of health insurance procedures and the systems that run them, with practical controls at each step.

A medical laboratory result is only as reliable as the weakest step behind it: a poorly identified sample, an unverified method, an ignored control rule or an undocumented report amendment. This programme gives laboratory managers and quality staff a practical way to build, run and improve a quality management system that meets ISO 15189:2022 and protects patient care.
