Advanced Quality Control for Building-Construction Projects

Many building projects have a quality manual and a stack of inspection forms, yet still suffer repeated defects, rejected work, delayed handover and long snag lists. The causes are familiar: quality plans copied from the last project, inspection and test plans that do not reflect the real risks, materials approved without adequate evidence, hold points released under schedule pressure, non-conformances closed without root cause, and records that cannot prove compliance at handover.

This programme follows the building from mobilisation to handover and treats quality control as a managed system rather than a set of forms. It moves through five stages: planning quality for the project, controlling materials and suppliers, controlling workmanship on site for the main trades, managing non-conformance and improvement with data, and achieving a clean handover with complete records.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references ISO 9001 quality management requirements, ISO 10005 guidance on quality plans, ISO 10006 guidance on quality management in projects, the quality management and compliance verification provisions of the FIDIC 2017 contracts, and widely used concrete and construction standards such as ACI 318, ACI 301, BS EN 206 and BS EN 13670. Information management with BIM is discussed with reference to ISO 19650. Participants are expected to apply the codes and specifications that govern their own projects.

Decisions this programme improves. Which activities need hold and witness points; what evidence is enough to approve a material or subcontractor; when to reject work and when to accept a concession; how to classify and escalate non-conformances; which quality indicators the project director should review each month; and whether the building is ready for handover.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a multi-storey mixed-use building moving from quality plan through concrete frame, envelope and MEP installation to testing, commissioning and handover. Participants draft inspection and test plans, review material submittals and test results, analyse non-conformance data and prepare a handover readiness checklist.
