Communication Skills for Internal Auditors

An audit can find the right issues and still fail if management does not accept the findings or act on them. This programme gives internal auditors practical communication skills for every stage of an engagement: opening meetings, interviews, handling resistance, writing clear findings and reports, and presenting results to management and audit committees.

Internal auditors are trained to test controls, yet much of their value depends on communication. Interviews produce defensive answers, findings are written as long descriptions of what was wrong without a clear cause or consequence, closing meetings turn into arguments about wording, and reports reach the audit committee too late and too long to support decisions. Auditees then see audit as a compliance exercise rather than a source of insight.

This programme follows the communication points of an audit engagement in order. It moves from building relationships and planning communication with stakeholders, through interviewing and gathering evidence, to structuring and writing findings, managing difficult conversations and agreeing actions, and finally reporting to senior management and the audit committee.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references the Institute of Internal Auditors' Global Internal Audit Standards, including the requirements on communicating with stakeholders, developing findings and communicating engagement results, and the widely used criteria, condition, cause and effect structure for findings. Participants learn how to apply these expectations in everyday audit work.

Decisions this programme improves. How to open an engagement so that management cooperates; which questions to ask and how to ask them; how to rate and word a finding so it is accurate and persuasive; when to escalate a disagreement; what belongs in an executive summary; and how to present audit results so that the audit committee can act.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a procurement audit that moves from an opening meeting through interviews and a disputed finding to a draft report and an audit committee presentation. Participants practise interviews and closing meetings in role plays and rewrite real-style findings and summaries.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own audit methodology, report templates and rating scales, and delivered to the whole internal audit function so that reports follow one consistent standard.
