Contract Management Fundamentals: From Initiation to Completion
Staff who manage contracts are often given the role without a structured grounding in how contracts work, so risks, obligations and changes are handled by instinct. This programme gives a clear foundation in the full contract life cycle, from identifying the need and forming the contract to monitoring performance, managing change and closing out.
Many contract problems come from basic gaps rather than complex legal issues. The requirement is poorly defined, key clauses are not understood, obligations are not tracked, performance is not measured and changes are agreed informally. When a dispute or a default occurs, staff are unsure of their rights, the remedies available or the correct procedure, and the organisation's position is weakened.
This programme follows the contract life cycle in a logical sequence. It moves through five stages: understanding what a contract is and how it is formed, planning and awarding contracts, reading and analysing obligations and risks, managing performance and change, and handling default, termination and completion.
Built on recognised practice. The programme references the World Commerce and Contracting Contract Management Standard for the contract life cycle, ISO 31000 for risk management and the structure of widely used standard forms such as the FIDIC contracts. Legal principles are explained at a general level; participants are shown where local law and their own organisation's procedures must be checked.
Decisions this programme improves. Which contract type suits a requirement; which clauses deserve most attention before signature; how to respond when a supplier underperforms; whether a request is a change that needs formal approval; and when default justifies remedies or termination.
How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a service contract followed from the business need through award, a performance problem, a change request and completion. Participants analyse clauses, build a simple obligations checklist, assess a change request and plan a contract close-out.
In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own contract templates, procurement regulations and approval authorities, and delivered to new contract staff and to technical staff who manage contracts as part of their role.
