Environmental Sustainability for Non-Specialists
Sustainability now shapes procurement rules, investor questions, customer expectations and national strategies, yet many staff outside the environmental function are unsure what it means for their own work. This programme gives non-specialists a clear, practical understanding of environmental sustainability, the language used around it and the everyday decisions where they can make a measurable difference.
Environmental sustainability is often treated as the job of one specialist team. Other departments hear terms such as net zero, Scope 3, circular economy and ESG without a clear explanation, and cannot see how they apply to buying, designing, operating or reporting. This leads to two problems: good opportunities to save energy, water and materials are missed, and well-meaning staff make public statements or purchasing choices that do not stand up to scrutiny.
This programme starts from the basics and builds towards practical action. It explains the main environmental challenges, the language and frameworks organisations use, and how a carbon footprint is measured. It then looks at where impacts arise in everyday operations and supply chains, and ends with how individuals and teams can contribute and communicate responsibly.
Built on recognised practice. The programme references the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, the GHG Protocol for carbon accounting, circular economy principles developed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the ISO 14001 environmental management system standard and ISO 14021 principles for environmental claims. They are explained in plain language for a non-technical audience.
What this changes in practice. Participants can ask better questions of suppliers and colleagues, recognise which activities drive their organisation's footprint, take sustainability into account in routine purchasing, travel, office and project decisions, and avoid vague or misleading environmental statements.
How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a mid-sized organisation preparing its first sustainability plan. Participants estimate a simple carbon footprint using spreadsheet tools, map impacts along a supply chain, review sample environmental claims and prepare a short improvement plan for their own team.
In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own sustainability strategy, targets and policies, and delivered to mixed groups from procurement, finance, operations, communications and administration so that everyone understands their part.
