Financial Management Skills for HR Professionals
HR decisions on pay, headcount, benefits and training are financial decisions, yet many HR professionals struggle to read the numbers or argue their case in the language finance and executives use. This programme builds the financial skills HR needs: reading financial statements, managing people costs and budgets, and building business cases that show the value of HR initiatives.
People costs are usually the largest controllable cost in service organisations and government bodies. Even so, HR proposals are often rejected or cut because they are presented as needs rather than investments, costs are underestimated, benefits are not quantified, and HR teams are unsure how their plans affect profit, cash flow or the approved budget. Finance colleagues then shape people decisions that HR should lead.
This programme gives HR professionals a working command of finance applied to their own decisions. It moves through five stages: understanding financial statements and annual reports, reading the financial health of the organisation, building and controlling the people cost budget, evaluating HR investments, and measuring and reporting the financial impact of HR.
Built on recognised practice. The programme references the structure of financial statements under IFRS, established budgeting and variance analysis methods, investment appraisal techniques such as payback, net present value and return on investment, and ISO 30414 guidelines for internal and external human capital reporting. Examples cover both commercial organisations and public sector budgets.
Decisions this programme improves. How to cost a new structure, pay review or benefits change accurately; how to explain a people cost variance; whether a training or recruitment investment is justified; which HR measures matter to the CFO and the board; and how to prioritise HR initiatives when budgets are constrained.
How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: an organisation planning a restructuring, a salary review and a leadership development programme within a fixed budget. Participants read its annual report, build the people cost budget, analyse variances and present a business case to a simulated finance committee.
In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own financial statements, budget cycle, grading and reward structures, and delivered to HR and finance business partners together so that both work from the same people cost model.
