Good Housekeeping Practices in Hospitality

Housekeeping shapes the guest's view of a property more than almost any other department, and it also drives a large share of labour, chemical, water, energy and laundry costs. This programme gives housekeeping supervisors and managers practical methods to deliver consistent cleanliness, work safely and efficiently, and cut waste and resource use without lowering standards.

Many properties struggle to keep housekeeping standards consistent. Room inspections vary by supervisor, cleaning chemicals are overused or mixed unsafely, linen and amenities are replaced by habit rather than need, and staff turnover means procedures are learned informally. Environmental commitments are often announced to guests but not built into daily routines, so the savings and the reputational benefit never appear.

This programme connects quality, safety, cost and sustainability in one set of housekeeping practices. It moves through five stages: setting clear standards and routines, applying correct cleaning and hygiene methods, keeping staff and guests safe, reducing resource use and waste, and leading the team so that good practice becomes habit.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references ISO 21401 on sustainability management systems for accommodation establishments, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria for hotels, eco-label programmes such as Green Key, the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for chemical labelling and safety data sheets, and ISO 45001 principles for occupational health and safety. They are used as practical reference points, not as certification checklists.

What this changes in practice. How to set and check a room standard that every attendant understands; which cleaning products and dilution methods to use; how to plan staffing and room allocation fairly; when linen and amenities should be changed; how to reduce water, energy and chemical use; and how to involve guests and suppliers in the effort.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a mid-size hotel with inconsistent inspection results, rising laundry and chemical costs and a new sustainability commitment. Participants review checklists, plan a floor allocation, assess chemical storage, and prepare a resource-saving plan for the department.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own brand standards, property types and procedures, and delivered on site with practical walk-throughs of rooms, public areas, linen rooms and chemical stores.
