Housekeeping Supervision and Management: Performance Improvement

Housekeeping is usually the largest department in a hotel or serviced facility and a major driver of guest satisfaction, labour cost and asset condition, yet it is often managed by habit. This programme gives housekeeping supervisors and managers practical tools to raise cleaning standards, improve productivity, control costs and lead their teams to consistent results.

Housekeeping performance often slips for familiar reasons. Standards are written but not checked in the same way by every supervisor. Room allocation and staffing do not match occupancy. Linen, chemicals and amenities are over-used or lost. Inspections find the same defects every week. Staff turnover is high, training is informal, and supervisors spend their time checking rooms rather than improving how the work is done. Guest reviews highlight cleanliness problems long before managers see them in reports.

This programme treats housekeeping as an operation that can be measured and improved. It moves through five stages: setting clear standards, planning and scheduling work, controlling costs and resources, leading and developing the team, and measuring performance and improving it continuously. It keeps the focus on the three areas that matter most: profit, people and product.

Built on recognised practice. The programme draws on established hospitality operations practice, Lean and 5S methods for workplace organisation, service quality concepts, occupational health and safety principles aligned with ISO 45001, safe chemical handling, infection prevention guidance for cleaning of guest and public areas, and recognised environmental practice in hospitality such as water, energy and waste reduction programmes.

Decisions this programme improves. How many attendants to schedule for forecast occupancy; what room credit or productivity standard is realistic; how often to inspect and what to inspect; where to cut linen, chemical and amenity costs without harming quality; when to outsource; and how to recognise, coach and retain good staff.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a full-service hotel with falling cleanliness scores and rising labour cost. Participants rewrite a room cleaning standard, build a staffing plan against occupancy, analyse a cost report, design an inspection checklist and present an improvement plan.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own brand standards, property types, systems and staffing model, and delivered to housekeeping teams in hotels, serviced apartments, hospitals, universities and facilities management operations.

Many buildings and infrastructure assets start their operating life with missing records, systems that are hard to maintain and costs nobody planned for, because facilities management was not involved during design and construction. This programme shows how to bring FM thinking into projects early, manage handover properly and set up the asset for efficient, safe operation.
