Job safety analysis is widely required but often poorly done. Forms are copied from previous jobs, steps are too general to reveal hazards, controls default to personal protective equipment and the workers who do the job are not involved. Conditions change on site, but the analysis does not. When an incident happens, the investigation often finds that the hazard was predictable and the control was weak or not in place.

This programme follows the process a competent team uses. It starts with selecting and prioritising jobs, moves to breaking them into steps and identifying hazards, then to assessing risk and choosing controls, and ends with communicating the analysis at the work front, checking that controls are in place and learning from incidents and change.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references the ISO 45001 requirements for hazard identification and assessment of risks, ISO 31000 and IEC 31010 on risk management and assessment techniques, the hierarchy of controls, the US OSHA guidance on job hazard analysis and human factors principles from recognised safety bodies. They are used to build a method that fits local procedures and permit-to-work systems.

Decisions this programme improves. Which jobs need a formal analysis first; how detailed the steps should be; whether a risk is acceptable or the task should be redesigned; which controls come before personal protective equipment; when work should stop because conditions have changed; and how supervisors verify that controls are working.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a maintenance task in an operating facility involving work at height, lifting and energy isolation. Participants write a job safety analysis in teams, challenge each other's controls and prepare a pre-task briefing.
