KYC Fundamentals: Assessing, Organizing and Presenting Customer Risk

Weak customer files are one of the most common findings in anti-money laundering inspections: missing ownership information, risk ratings with no rationale and reviews that never happen. This programme gives compliance, onboarding and relationship staff a clear, risk-based method to collect customer information, assess risk, apply enhanced due diligence and present a file that stands up to review.

Most institutions have a KYC policy, but the quality of individual customer files varies widely. Staff collect documents without knowing what question each one answers, beneficial ownership stops at the first layer of a structure, risk scores are produced by a tool nobody can explain, and enhanced due diligence becomes a longer checklist rather than a deeper understanding. When an auditor, regulator or correspondent bank asks why a customer was accepted, the file does not tell the story.

This programme follows the life of a customer relationship. It starts with the purpose of KYC and the risk-based approach, then moves through identification and verification, understanding ownership and control, rating customer risk, applying enhanced measures where risk is higher, and organising and presenting the file so that the reasoning is visible. It ends with ongoing monitoring, periodic review and exit decisions.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references the FATF Recommendations, in particular those on the risk-based approach, customer due diligence, politically exposed persons and beneficial ownership, together with FATF guidance on the risk-based approach for the banking sector, the Basel Committee guidelines on the sound management of risks related to money laundering and financing of terrorism, and the Wolfsberg Group principles and correspondent banking due diligence questionnaire. Participants apply these to the rules of their own jurisdiction.

Decisions this programme improves. Whether enough is known to onboard a customer; which risk rating a customer should carry and why; when simplified or enhanced measures are appropriate; what source of funds and source of wealth evidence is sufficient; when a change in behaviour should trigger a review or a suspicious activity report; and when a relationship should be exited.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around a set of realistic customer files, from an individual salaried client to a corporate customer with a layered ownership structure and a politically exposed person. Participants rate each customer, identify gaps, decide on enhanced measures and write a short file summary for an approver.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be aligned with your own KYC policy, risk rating methodology, customer forms and national regulations, and delivered to onboarding, relationship management and compliance teams together so that all three apply the same standard.

Wealth management staff are expected to discuss markets, products and client needs with confidence, yet many join from other roles without a structured grounding in the industry. This programme builds that foundation, covering the economic environment, asset classes, investment funds, regulation, financial planning and portfolio construction, and helps participants prepare for the CISI International Certificate in Wealth & Investment Management examination.

Small and medium-sized enterprises often fail not from lack of sales but from weak cash flow, thin margins and financial statements that owners, lenders and investors cannot rely on. This programme teaches practical financial analysis for SMEs: reading and adjusting their accounts, assessing profitability, liquidity and solvency, and judging whether a business can grow or repay its debt.
