Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)

Many laboratories buy a LIMS and still run on spreadsheets, paper worksheets and manual transcription, because the system was configured before the workflows, data and controls were understood. This programme gives laboratory, quality and IT staff a practical method to define requirements, select, validate and run a LIMS that supports data integrity and ISO/IEC 17025 compliance.

A laboratory information management system should give a laboratory control over samples, tests, results and reports. In practice, projects often go wrong in predictable ways. Requirements are copied from a vendor brochure, workflows are automated as they are rather than as they should be, instruments are not integrated, master data is inconsistent, validation is treated as paperwork and users find workarounds. The result is a costly system that auditors question and staff do not trust.

This programme treats a LIMS as part of the laboratory management system, not as an IT product. It moves from mapping the laboratory's processes and data flows, through writing requirements and selecting a solution, to configuration, validation, go-live and continuous improvement, with data integrity and quality requirements running through every stage.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references ISO/IEC 17025:2017, in particular its requirements for the control of data and information management, the ASTM E1578 guide to laboratory informatics, the OECD Principles of Good Laboratory Practice and related OECD guidance on computerised systems, the ALCOA+ data integrity principles and the risk-based validation approach of ISPE GAMP 5. Where relevant, regulated laboratories are shown how FDA 21 CFR Part 11 and EU GMP Annex 11 affect electronic records and signatures.

Decisions this programme improves. Whether the laboratory is ready for a LIMS; which requirements are essential and which are preferences; how to compare vendors, including cloud and on-premises options; how much validation is proportionate; how to plan data migration and instrument integration; and how to judge whether the system is delivering value after go-live.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a testing laboratory moving from paper and spreadsheets to a LIMS. Participants map its sample workflow, write user requirements, score two vendor proposals, draft a validation plan and prepare a go-live readiness check.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be built around your own laboratory workflows, existing systems and current or planned LIMS, and delivered to laboratory, quality and IT staff together.

Unlicensed software, unused subscriptions and poorly understood licence terms create financial and legal exposure that often only becomes visible during a vendor audit. This programme gives IT, procurement and compliance practitioners a practical approach to software asset management: knowing what is installed and used, understanding licence rules, controlling spend and staying ready for audit across on-premises and cloud environments.

In analytical work, the largest errors often happen before the sample reaches the instrument: in how it was collected, stored, subsampled, extracted or digested. This programme gives laboratory staff a practical, quality-focused approach to sample handling and preparation, so that results are representative, repeatable and defensible under a laboratory quality system.
