Maintenance Management Frameworks for Complex Systems

In complex systems such as airports, metros, desalination plants, hospitals and process complexes, maintenance failures rarely stay local: one weak interface can stop a whole operation. This programme gives senior maintenance and asset leaders the frameworks to govern maintenance across many interacting systems, from design and handover through operation, risk and performance.

Complex facilities combine thousands of assets from many suppliers, several maintenance contractors, shared utilities and control systems, and demanding availability targets. Maintenance is often organised system by system, each with its own manuals, contractor and data, while the real risks sit at the interfaces. Requirements for maintainability are lost during design, handover arrives with incomplete data, and leaders find it hard to see whether the maintenance regime as a whole is fit for purpose.

This programme gives a framework view. It starts with the asset management system and governance, then looks at how maintenance requirements are defined over the life cycle, how maintenance concepts are built for systems of systems, how risk and performance are managed across interfaces and contractors, and how digital information supports decisions. The emphasis is on design of the overall regime and on the questions leaders should ask, not on detailed task analysis.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references the ISO 55000 asset management series, ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288 on system life cycle processes, the IEC 60300 dependability management series including reliability-centred maintenance and life cycle costing, IEC 61508 on functional safety, the ASD S3000L and S4000P specifications for logistics support analysis and preventive maintenance development, and ISO 14224 for reliability and maintenance data.

Decisions this programme improves. How to structure maintenance governance across systems, contractors and owners; which maintenance requirements to specify at design and accept at handover; where to apply detailed reliability analysis; how to allocate risk and performance obligations in maintenance contracts; which system-level measures the executive team should see; and where investment in digital tools will actually improve decisions.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a large public infrastructure facility with integrated mechanical, electrical, control and safety systems moving from construction into operation. Participants map its system interfaces, build a maintenance concept, test a performance-based contract and prepare a board-level maintenance assurance report.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own asset portfolio, operating model and contracts, and used to review an existing maintenance framework or to prepare for the handover of a new facility.
