Polymer Business Fundamentals

Staff in petrochemical and plastics companies often know their own function well but not how the polymer business makes or loses money. This programme gives newcomers and non-technical professionals a clear foundation in polymer types, production, applications, markets, pricing, supply chains and the growing sustainability pressures that now shape the industry.

The polymer business is a long chain that runs from oil and gas feedstocks through crackers and polymerisation plants to converters, brand owners and, increasingly, recyclers. People in commercial, finance, planning, logistics and support roles often see only one link. Without a picture of the whole chain, it is hard to understand why margins swing, why one grade sells at a premium, why a customer switches supplier, or why regulation on packaging in a distant market can affect a plant in the Gulf.

This programme builds that picture step by step. It starts with what polymers are and how their properties decide their uses, then follows the value chain from feedstock to finished product, examines how markets, prices and margins work, looks at customers, logistics and trade, and ends with sustainability and the circular economy as business issues rather than only technical ones.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references established industry concepts and standards, including standard polymer abbreviations and classifications, common grade specifications such as melt flow index, ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 principles of life cycle assessment, ISO 15270 guidance on plastics recovery and recycling, and Incoterms rules for international trade. Technical content is explained in plain language for non-specialists.

Decisions this programme improves. How to explain product and grade differences to customers and colleagues; how to read feedstock, price and margin movements; which customer segments and applications carry the most value; how logistics and trade terms affect net revenue; and how sustainability requirements are changing product and market choices.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a producer of polyethylene and polypropylene deciding how to place a new grade in export markets while facing feedstock changes and customer demands for recycled content. Exercises use simple margin, netback and market-mapping models.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own product portfolio, markets and value chain position, and used as an induction programme for new commercial, finance and support staff.
