Project Monitoring through Quality Assurance and Control

Defects found at handover cost far more to fix than defects prevented during design and delivery, yet many projects treat quality as a final inspection. This programme shows project and quality professionals how to plan quality, run assurance and control activities throughout the project, and use quality data to monitor performance and act early.

Quality problems in projects rarely come from a lack of procedures. They come from requirements and acceptance criteria that were never made measurable, quality plans copied from a previous project, inspections that are scheduled but not linked to risk, and nonconformances that are closed on paper without addressing the cause. Quality data is collected but not analysed, so recurring problems reach the client or the end user before they reach management.

This programme links quality management to project monitoring. It moves through five stages: defining quality requirements and acceptance criteria, preparing a project quality plan, carrying out quality assurance through audits and reviews, applying quality control and inspection methods, and using quality records and indicators to monitor performance, drive corrective action and capture lessons.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references ISO 10006 guidelines for quality management in projects, ISO 10005 guidelines for quality plans, the requirements and principles of ISO 9001, the auditing guidance in ISO 19011, the project management guidance in ISO 21502 and the quality performance aspects of the PMI PMBOK Guide. It also uses the established basic quality tools and root cause analysis methods.

Decisions this programme improves. Which deliverables and processes need the most quality attention; where to place inspection and test points; when a nonconformance can be accepted, reworked or rejected; whether a corrective action addresses the real cause; and what quality information the sponsor and client should see each month.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a facilities or infrastructure project with several contractors and a demanding client. Participants write acceptance criteria, prepare a project quality plan and an inspection and test plan, conduct a simulated process audit, analyse nonconformance data and present a quality status report.

In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to your own quality management system, contract requirements, inspection forms and reporting tools, and delivered to project, quality and contractor representatives together.
