Rapid Assessment and Recovery of Troubled Projects

Projects get into trouble for familiar reasons: unclear scope and benefits, optimistic schedules and budgets, weak sponsorship, poor supplier performance, and a reporting culture that hides bad news. When the problems finally surface, organisations often react by adding people, pressure and meetings, which makes the situation worse. What is needed is a fast, independent and evidence-based assessment followed by a disciplined recovery.

This programme follows the recovery path in five stages: recognising that a project is in trouble and mobilising a review, carrying out a rapid assessment of status and root causes, deciding on the right option and building the recovery plan, stabilising and leading the project through recovery, and preventing recurrence through governance and early warning systems.

Built on recognised practice. The programme references the PMI PMBOK Guide and Standard for Project Management, ISO 21502 guidance on project management, the PRINCE2 principles of management by exception and continued business justification, independent assurance approaches such as gateway reviews, and earned value management for forecasting. Participants apply them to the specific problem of recovery.

Decisions this programme improves. When to trigger an independent review; what the review should look at first; whether the project can be recovered, should be re-scoped or should be stopped; which trade-offs between scope, time, cost and quality to propose to the sponsor; what to change in the team, suppliers and governance; and when the project can be declared stable.

How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a delayed and over-budget programme with an unhappy client and a strained supplier relationship. Participants conduct interviews and document reviews, forecast the outturn, identify root causes, present recovery options to a steering committee and prepare a stabilisation plan.
