Understanding Environmental Thinking Styles and Models
Teams often get stuck on workplace problems because everyone approaches them in the same way, or because different thinking preferences clash instead of combining. This programme gives professionals and team leaders a practical understanding of thinking styles and models, and shows how to use them to solve the real problem, challenge assumptions and build more creative teams.
Most organisations say they want innovation, yet their meetings, approval processes and performance systems reward quick agreement and familiar solutions. People rarely know their own thinking preferences, let alone those of colleagues, so disagreements are treated as personality problems. Teams jump to solutions before they understand the problem, and creative ideas are killed early by analysis that arrives too soon.
This programme looks at thinking as a skill that can be understood and managed within the work environment. It moves through five stages: understanding how people think and decide, recognising personal and team thinking preferences, applying structured thinking models to define and solve problems, generating and developing creative ideas, and building a team and workplace environment where different thinking styles contribute to better results.
Built on recognised practice. The programme references widely used models, including the Herrmann Whole Brain model, Kirton's adaption and innovation theory, de Bono's Six Thinking Hats and lateral thinking, dual process theory of fast and slow thinking, systems thinking and design thinking. It treats thinking style instruments as tools for discussion and self-awareness, not as fixed labels or selection tests.
Decisions this programme improves. How to frame a problem before looking for solutions; which thinking approach suits a given task; how to compose teams so that different perspectives are represented; when to switch from divergent to convergent thinking; and how leaders can create conditions in which people challenge existing approaches safely.
How it is delivered. Twenty hours across five sessions, built around one running case: a service team that must redesign a process which customers and staff both find frustrating. Participants reflect on their own preferences, apply several thinking models to the case and present a redesigned solution to a simulated leadership panel.
In-house option. For organisations, the programme can be tailored to a real challenge from your own organisation and delivered to an intact team, so that participants map their collective thinking preferences and agree how they will work together.
